Google is far and away the go-to search engine. You can spend as much time as you want building a website and getting excited about your new business, but if Google or other search engines can’t pull up your website, you’re in for a big disappointment. Fortunately, there are ways you can optimize your site to make it more search engine friendly.

Content

The first step should be taken while you are still in the process of building your website. The more content you have, the more likely your site is to be found—and it’s extremely important to make sure that information is both relevant and engaging. Don’t let your website grow stagnant. Add new pages as often as possible, put up new photos or blog posts, or redesign your whole website if for some reason it’s not working out for you. Sometimes, simplicity in your website is key. Give each page a simple and proper title, and make sure that your website’s url is something simple and easy to recognize, which will give it a higher chance of being pulled up by Google. Try to name your pages using keywords that your target audience members are likely to search for, and use these keywords frequently throughout your site. Looking closer at this idea, your business may own several products or possess information that would only be searched for by people who are extremely knowledgeable in your field. This leaves little chance for the majority of potential customers to find your site. You may need to name your pages in a way that could be understood by any average person, and then you can go into more detailed descriptions in the information below the title of the page. Basically, “dumbing down” the keywords and titles of your webpages will make your website much more likely to be brought up in a Google search.

Once you have done this and your site is optimized for search engines, you should contact Google. Submit your site at http://google.com/submityourcontent , which will add your website to Google’s index. You will also want to add a sitemap. Adding a sitemap to Google allows their search spider to crawl your website—essentially, it allows Google to pull up more pages of your website when keywords are put into the search engine. Signing up with Google Analytics allows you to see statistics on your website, such as how many hits you have and where in the world they’re coming from, and the keywords people used to find your website. Looking at these keywords allows you to change your content to further increase the chances of your site being pulled up. Remember to resubmit your sitemap every time you add content or change your website in any way, so that Google is aware of the changes. To further increase your chances of being pulled up online, add your website to the indexes of other search engines such as Bing and Yahoo. Each website has a slightly different method for adding you to their index, but it’s a good idea to index your website with as many search engines as possible. Adding your website to various search engines is a key component in increasing the number of hits to your website, and it should be a top priority when building and adding to your website. Remember, too, that constantly adding to your website will greatly increase the chances of Google and other major search engines finding your site. Never let your website’s activity grow stagnant, and always keep your information relevant and exciting!
